ようやく次世代Web標準の流れが確定した模様です。
W3Cの発表によると、
XHTML 2 Working Group Expected to Stop Work End of 2009, W3C to Increase Resources on HTML 5
2009-07-02: Today the Director announces that when the XHTML 2 Working Group charter expires as scheduled at the end of 2009, the charter will not be renewed. By doing so, and by increasing resources in the Working Group, W3C hopes to accelerate the progress of HTML 5 and clarify W3C’s position regarding the future of HTML. ということで、W3Cの2009年末にチャプターが終了するXHTML 2作業部会は延長されず、そのリソースは今後（HTML5策定中の）HTML作業部会に投入されることが決定したようです。さらに、この決定によりWebの将来に対するW3Cの立ち位置を明確にすることを望んでいるということです。

一時的にXHTMLへとぶれてしまっていたWeb標準化への道のりは、スマートフォンを中心に採用が広がるHTML5へと収束することが決まりました。
すでに流れは見えていたとはいえ、W3CがHTML5統一への強い意志を示したことで混乱がなくなり、よりいっそうHTML5標準への流れが強まるでしょう。また、一歩先行する形でプラットフォームで統一してHTML5対応を行っているスマートフォン市場は、その実験場としての意味合いが強まるのではないかと考えられます。
