Mac版Chromeは今年の夏頃

Windows版が先行リリースされ、Mac版Linux版が遅れているGoogleブラウザ「Chrome」ですが、Google担当者によるとリリースは今年の夏頃になるのではないかと言うことです。

Google released its own WebKit-based, open source browser in 2008, in part to advance the use of web apps, but the original release was—and still is—Windows-only for now. Though Code Weavers’ offers the CrossOver Chromium port that runs on Mac OS X, Google is already making headway on a native version and expects to have it ready by the end of the first half of this year.

Google’s Brian Rakowski, Chrome’s product manager, spoke to CNet recently about the progress that’s being made on the project. Saying he is hopeful that the Mac (and Linux) version will be ready in the first half of 2009, he told CNet that the Mac team “is able to render most Web pages pretty well.”

“[I]n terms of the user experience, it’s very basic,” Rakowski said of the Mac version. “We have not spent any time building out features. We’re still iterating on making it stable and getting the architecture right.”

GoogleのChrome製品マネージャBrian Rakowski氏の言葉として、「the first half of 2009」つまり2009年の前半になる見通しを述べています。どうやら、外装部分よりもベースとなる部分の実装に時間を掛けているようで、現在の開発中バージョンはMacネイティブアプリの概観を備えていないようです。

実際のところWindowsバージョンのChromeでもCSS3サポートやフォントレンダリング性能においてSafariよりも遅れた状態であり、現時点でのChrome優位性は主に機能面だけに絞られています。そのため、早期にMac版をリリースしても、期待を裏切ることになるだけと言う気がしています。

※βバージョンではフォントレンダリングは1.0よりもかなりマシになっていますが、逆に1.0で正常だったbox-shadowが消えてしまい、text-shadowがぶっ壊れた状態になっていたりします。
